An abnormal smear test does not necessarily mean wart infection (HPV) or malignancy, as usually other benign conditions may cause changes in the cells of the cervix. Pathological findings on smear tests should be always followed up with colposcopic examination and subsequently biopsies and appropriate treatment when necessary. Colposcopy should be performed only by a gynaecologist who had the relevant training and accreditation in colposcopy.
